The Realme GT 2 Pro is official. Blitzkreiging it’s way into the premium segment, Realme is billing the flagship as a choice for consumers against Apple and Samsung flagships. Well, equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, 50MP triple cameras and 120Hz LTPO display, the Realme GT 2 Pro can very well give a good fight to the entrenched stalwarts. Here’s our first impressions —
Build and Design
The Realme GT 2 Pro is made keeping the environment in mind. Instead of removing chargers to save the planet, the company is taking a more holistic approach by choosing more sustainable materials to build the phone, as well as the packaging. Designed by Realme’s patented Naoko Fukusawa, the Realme GT 2 Pro looks sexy. It has a papier mache-like texture made out of eco-friendly materials that’s also stain resistant.
The GT 2 Pro, despite sporting a large 6.7-inch screen, is super compact to hold and use. The edges are rounded and fits the palm like a glove. It’s also only 8.18mm thick. In all, this one’s a handy phone to use with a narrower grip than other similarly-sized phones from last year. You get the GT 2 Pro in Paper Green, Paper White and Steel Black finishes.
Display
The 6.7-inch panel is also the best Realme ever had to offer. It’s a QHD+ LTPO 2.0 AMOLED panel, that means this one can truly cycle between 1Hz to 120Hz depending on the content on the screen. Realme advertised 1300 nits of peak brightness and 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio with DCI-P3 colour depth. With the game mode on, and in certain situations, the touch sampling rate also jumps to 1000Hz. The display spans the entire front fascia of the phone, with the bezels narrower than they’ve ever been. Overall, this seems to be a great display to look at, and it brings out the colours with a lot of depth.
Camera
Instead of packing the usual wide, ultrawide and telephoto lenses found in most flagship smartphones, the GT 2 Pro packs a 50MP Sony IMX 766 primary camera, another Samsung 50MP ultrawide camera, and a microscope lens that can go even closer than a macro lens. The 50MP ultrawide has a 150-degree FOV, enabling new features like a fisheye effect. There’s OIS as well as EIS for stable photos and videos, and a new noise reduction algorithm. You can shoot videos with portrait mode, and there’s also a dedicated night mode for videos. On the front is a 32MP selfie camera. Quite interestingly, Realme said they’re readying their under-display cameras for launch in H2 2022, so the punch-hole display will now be short-lived.
Performance and Battery
The Realme GT 2 Pro runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 combined with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. You get the smartphone in either 8GB+128GB or 12GB+256GB variants. The former is priced EUR 749 while the higher variant will retail for EUR 849 in Europe. For the little time I used the phone, it felt nice and smooth. The higher refresh rate and higher resolution comes into play beautifully, and the new Realme UI 3.0 looks good on the phone. There was very little bloatware in the UI (that could be an EU thing), but the new UI feels a lot more minimalist and refreshing than before.
The Realme GT 2 Pro packs a large 5000mAh battery, but this isn’t the fastest charging smartphone that company was teasing. The GT 2 Pro sticks to the 65W SuperDart charging as before, but the company did tease it’s 125W UltraDart Charging in the same event, coming soon the Realme GT Neo 3.
First Impressions
The Realme GT 2 Pro comes off as a fantastic first attempt. The company has got its heart in the right place. Innovating for the masses, but also taking care of the environment. The choice of the materials used in the phone, along with the performance and display sets it apart from previous attempts at making a flagship, and could be considered as a good alternative to the iPhones and Samsung Galaxys in the premium segment. The price seems a bit high for the Indian market, but that’s usually the case with most smartphones available in Europe. The India launch price is likely to be a little lesser.
